We follow the day-to-day lives of a family in Holland, IIRC, and on the book's last page, the Nazis are coming down the road. Mom sets the table for one last peacetime dinner, and says, in effect, "this at least they cannot take away from us."Doyu Shoninhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00148504542232844586noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28394335.post-30013144701204916582010-10-27T21:21:00.336-07:002010-10-27T21:21:00.336-07:00Makes me both optimistic and concerned about our c...Makes me both optimistic and concerned about our current plans for fifth wheel life. 'Course there's always the option of the tricked out RV from Bill Murray's old army movie. Ha!

After what we've been through here, I no longer know the best approach to prepare for the doom and gloom. I'm inclined to reiterate what hubby and I occasionally discuss: quality of life is far more important to us than quantity of life. We definitely sacrificed the former trying to prep to have more of the latter should things fall apart. Yes, Hummingbird is heavily involved with the bean and grain project, which I'm very excited about; they've already proven that the claim you can't grow hard wheat here is bunk. They just had an event last weekend, where you could go and buy locally-grown beans and grains; I picked up 30 pounds of organic soft wheat berries, five or six pounds of rolled oats and a pound of flax seed. Had to drive 55 miles to do it -- : < -- but it's still a lot more local than, say, Minnesota, or wherever it is Bob's buys their wheat from before it winds up at the local health food store. Plus, this way I can have really fresh flour; home-ground.
They grow soft wheat up here, but then they export it all ... guess I need to go make some friends ...
I wanted to buy a larger quantity of soft wheat, doubting 30 pounds will last me the year, and more hard wheat berries, but I still have more than 50 pounds of hard wheat left, and the husband rebelled. Ah, well. It's something; the event was heavily attended, and they're planning more for the future. And maybe when I'm in a position to grow our own, there will be farmers with advice to provide.
Thought of your cider vinegar recently, when I discovered all the raspberry and raspberry-ginger melomel I was excited about trying had fermented rather too much. I now have a large quantity of fine raspberry vinegar. All the more so, as earlier in the summer, I macerated raspberries in vinegar to produce ... raspberry vinegar.
It's a lifetime supply! Anybody wanna trade me for some grain? : D
NMAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28394335.post-12442304434971531802010-10-27T16:54:17.880-07:002010-10-27T16:54:17.880-07:00Yes, I did talk to them once. They are a bit north of me.

Here we have a wholesaler, Hummingbird Organic, that's doing quite a lot with former grass seed farmers, and they encourage me to start a food club and buy through them.
